What is silicon carbide abrasives?

Silicon carbide abrasives usually include black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide.

Both black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide are made from quartz sand and petroleum coke, the only difference is adding salt during melting when produce green silicon carbide.

Then are there any exact differences between black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide?

Black silicon carbide abrasives

Black silicon carbide, about 98% SiC as its main chemical, appears shining black. Its mohs hardness is about 9.15,it has a certain degree of brittleness and toughness. It is usually used to process materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.

Green silicon carbide abrasives

Green silicon carbide, with 99% SiC,high than black silicon carbide, looks green or light green. Green silicon carbide has mohs hardness about 9.5,then it is more wear resistant than black silicon carbide.Besides, green silicon carbide has better thermal conductivity, shock resistance, chemical stability and corrosion resistance.Because above advantages, green silicon carbide is often used in fields of fine grinding and semiconductors.

In a summary, because of their high hardness, chemical stability and good toughness, silicon carbide works well in production of grinding wheel, whetstone, coated abrasives etc.
