The role of silicon carbide (SiC) in non-metallic matrix composites

Silicon carbide SiC is produced by high-temperature smelting in an electric resistance furnace using main raw materials such as quartz sand and petroleum coke (salt needs to be added when producing green silicon carbide).

Silicon carbide (SiC) primarily functions as a reinforcing agent, toughening agent, and enhances high-temperature/environmental stability in non-metallic composite materials (such as ceramic-based, resin-based, and carbon-based composites).

Enhanced mechanical properties: As a reinforcement in the form of particles, whiskers or fibers,silicon carbide SiC significantly improves the strength, stiffness and wear resistance of composite materials, and its high modulus (~400 GPa) and hardness (~9–10 Mohs) effectively bear loads.

Toughening mechanism: Silicon Carbide SiC whiskers/fibers can inhibit crack propagation and improve the fracture toughness of brittle materials such as ceramic matrices through mechanisms such as crack bridging, pull-out effect and deflection.

Enhanced thermal and chemical stability: Silicon Carbide SiC has high thermal conductivity, low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent oxidation resistance (stable at >1200°C) and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for high-temperature structural components (such as aero engines and brake discs) and corrosive environments.

Functional Contributions: Improves thermal/electrical conductivity in resin-based composites; enhances interfacial bonding and antioxidant coating properties in carbon/carbon composites; serves as a primary reinforcing phase in ceramic matrix composites (CMC-SiC), achieving lightweight and high heat resistance.

Dimensional Stability: Reduces the overall coefficient of thermal expansion of composite materials, suitable for precision components (such as aerospace mirror blanks and electronic packaging substrates).
